In the infinite quest to delight and impress today’s luxury wellness customer, spa designers, architects and some spa equipment manufacturers are turning to solid surface materials such as Corian to deliver a modern wow factor. Traditional materials such as mosaic, stone, wood and acrylic will always hold a place in the spa designer’s toolkit but that Corian works on so many levels of spa design, it’s a wonder its popularity is only coming to a fore in recent years. Corian is a solid surface which from an aesthetic point of view means clean lines, most frequently minimalist design and with a huge colour palette, the ability to work well in any design scheme. In addition to its aesthetic qualities, Corian is non-porous and can be seamless and as such is an ideal material for use in a wet leisure environment, particularly where cleaning and maintenance is concerned. From a spa user perspective, the material has a warm and soft appeal more akin to wood than stone and the smooth finish lends itself to the best chromo therapy lighting experiences helping to create the comfortable, relaxing environment demanded from spa and wellness facilities.
Swimming Pool Design
Whilst cladding a pool interior in Corian is beyond the budget of most projects, the beauty of Corian can be incorporated into flat overflow channel covers instead of the more recognisable and common ABS grating. This simple design addition can elevate the status of a pool project to luxury heights and with so many colours available can help to tie the pool edging into the overall interior design of the wellness space.
Hot Tub / Jacuzzi Design
Portable hot tubs are considered “a” luxury though not luxury in its truest sense. The bulky grey or brown plastic boxes that make up the exterior of many American style hot tubs often fall short of being specified in high end design. Some hot tub manufacturers (notably European) have taken strides toward improving hot tub aesthetics to make them not only palatable but desirable to the most discerning of customers. The Cube Spa or Origami Spa by Aquavia are such examples, as is our own Velvet Spa manufactured in Portugal. The workability of Corian allows recessed lighting and other features that sculpt a hot tub cabinet into artistic furniture.
Steam Rooms and Saunas
Thermal spa treatment rooms are places where users lay and sit, perspiring on the benches and walls which are often wood or grouted mosaics. This alone makes Corian a favoured choice with its easy to clean surfaces, though other finishes such as Coril acrylic such as used in our Proteu steam rooms match this benefit. More than this however, are the aesthetic and experiential appeals Corian can bring to steam and sauna. Traditional mosaic and pine finishes struggle to work in modern wellness suites leading designers to hide away cabin interiors with solid walls with just a glass door on display so as not to clash with the external spa and wellness area. Full Corian interiors with wall panels and benches soft to the touch, elegantly set-off with LED and fibre-optic lighting call out to be display centrepieces of wellness facilities with full glass fronts.
