At Aegean, we built one of our first bespoke swimming pools in 1987. Since then, we’ve seen all the trends, all the innovations (some of which we participated in) and, as time went by, and we learnt more about what our customers wanted their pool to ‘feel’ like, from both a physical and emotional perspective – and, of course, the term pool became increasingly broad. A swim spa can be viewed as a sort of endless pool, providing resistance for the swimmer to swim against. So, here are some great ideas to think about when trying to imagine your personal pool – as no two people are alike in what they consider their personal perfect. These great ideas are perfect for all weathers and all seasons (with a good pool heater!):
1. Water Features – Waterfalls, ornaments, fountains!

There is something special about the sound of running water isn’t there. Many ‘white noise’ machines, designed to help you relax, feature running water or light rain. Why? Because being comfortable is complicated, achieving relaxation depends on so many factors – from the way our brains are wired, so what particular stresses in life we’re worried about on that particular afternoon or evening. So, what about adding water to the pool space? An island in the centre of a larger pool can fulfil many functions (see below) – but it could be the host of a fabulous fountain or a wondrous waterfall!
2. Swim Up-Bar with Ledge Seating
Having a poolside bar, or even a great well-stocked island bar in the middle of the pool – complete with seating can turn your pool into a social focal point, as well as giving the phrase ‘pool party’ a more 007 feel! Consider placing ledges (perhaps equipped with jets and bubbles!) around the bar area to give those who want to have a tipple and socialise a place to call their home!
3. Theme Lighting

Lighting can accomplish many, many different things – from simple illumination, to directly affecting our state of mind. It’s not hard to believe that light affects our mood – as the light from the sun set’s the sleeping routines of the entire human race! Then there’s chromatherapy in products such as Experience Showers. The usage of coloured lighting can make pools more inviting, can make you feel more relaxed, meditative, and perhaps even more spiritual! In a luxury swimming pool – Theme Lighting can act to create zones, acting to divide the space into different experiential areas. A covered, darker jacuzzi area in a pool-peninsula with both under-ledge and above LED lighting fixtures can create an experience not dissimilar from that of a floatation tank! Decorating the bar with red and green in the festive season can turn mere electronic circuits into an expression of festivity! The opportunities here are practically endless…
4. Tanning Ledges
When thinking about swimming pool design, tanning Ledges in the summer months can give people wishing for a more bronzed complexion a place all of their own. Elegantly designed sun loungers, and a place to put them that allows easy access to all of the other areas of the pool space, is definitely something to consider!
5. A Fireplace
Seriously, a fire-pit or a full fireplace are orders of magnitude more elegant than a set of patio heaters for the cooler nights – and provide a perfect place to dry off naturally, have a tipple, and socialise around the fire! In fact, it could be argued that socialising around the fire may be the oldest form of a social gathering in human history. Another thing to think about…
